Mitä diversiteetin ylläpito merkitsee ruuantuotannolle?

Maaperän merkitys niin diversiteetin ylläpidolle kuin ruuan ravintoarvoille tulevat Gabe Brownin esityksessä hienosti esille (linkki alla sinisellä)

Maanpinnan suojaaminen ja monipuolinen viljelykasvisto

Suosittelen lämpimästi katsomaan videon, vaikka pituutta on tunti.

How much nutrients are in your plants?

Oletko tullut miettineesi, mistä riippuu kasvattamasi sadon ravinnepitoisuudet?

Kasvi ottaa ravinteet maasta, eli kasvimaasi multa/maa määrittelee, paljonko saat ravinteita sadostasi.

Suomessa tällainen maaperästä puuttuva aine on seleeni.

Siksi tasapainoinen ravinnetila on kokonaisuudessaan paras. Viljelykierto-postauksessani kerron kasvivaihtelun merkityksestä ja kateviljelyn eduista.

Have you ever thought about the nutrient content of the crop you have grown?

The plants take the nutrients from the ground. It is the soil / land of your garden that determines how much nutrients you get from your harvest. You may add nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as fertilizer, but micro-nutrients may not always come with them. By using compost and mulching, you get these nutrients which are nutritionally important for the plants and you, even if the required amounts are only very small. That is why they are called micro-nutrients.

There are some areas in the world where is a lack of certain nutrients and need to be added as fertilizer. Otherwise people and animals do not get all nutrients what they need to stay healthy. A local disease occurring in a certain area is called endemic disease. The nutrient deficiencies in the soil are one of the reason that causes the endemic diseases.

In Finland, such a soil-missing substance is selenium. Therefore, selenium is added to animal feed. However, selenium is not added to our home gardens, but I took this as one example.

Each nutrient has its own meaning for plant growth and development. Therefore, the balanced nutrient state is the best in its entirety. In my crop rotation post, I tell you about the importance of plant fluctuation and the benefits of roof cultivation.

Ilmastonmuutos, vaikuttaako minuun? Kyllä! The climate change: does it affect me! Yes it does!

Koul, O. & Cuperus, G.W. (2007) Ecologically based integrated pest management.

Samoin kateviljely on erinomainen apu.

There is many daily news about climate change in public. Ten years ago, there were some disagreement about the phenomenon. At the moment, there is no longer any disagreement between the serious scientists and it is therefore good to think about whether it affects our home-grown farmers and how, if any.

Here are a few important points that I have in my mind:

* In addition to rising temperatures, the growing potential of the pest is also improved. Winters are becoming more widespread, so we must be awake early in the spring for the pest management.

* In the past, soil-borne diseases were eliminated during the cold winters, but the change in temperature also affects these diseases, they will survive during the warmer winters. By crop rotation, we can reduce this risk already now.

* In old familiar varieties, crop defects may occur if winter is not cold enough and last long enough. The dormance or sleep mode maybe does not end as it should in the spring. For some perennial plants, the cold season of winter is a prerequisite for new growth and harvest.

* precipitation may decrease and drought will be more frequent during the growing season. We can already influence this by improving the structure of the soil and increasing the amount of organic matter. Both of the help to increase the country's ability to retain moisture. Similarly, mulching is an excellent aid. The surface of the earth reduces the evaporation of water, the lighter soil does not absorb so much heat during the summertime, and the incoming rain can be absorbed into the ground and does not flow off the surface. Many mulching materials themselves can also store moisture.
